You Capture | Weekly Favorites

It's been an instagram kind of picture-taking life these days.  My phone is convenient and some days (lately) I'm just too tired to dig out my big girl camera.  We've been holed up in the kitchen working on potty training (read: floor is easy to clean, no stairs to climb, big-boy potty tucked in a corner right next to the Target Toy Catalog).  Some days are crap - Sunday Finn sat on the potty for 20 minutes.  We talked about church and songs and dump trucks.  He hopped off with a quick, "All done!  Play cars."  I swear, not two minutes later I went to check on him in his room and there was a mysterious puddle on his car's street mat.  It looked as though Hurricane Sandy had visited the red house on Matchbox Street.  And he was adamant that he did not pee, in spite of the evidence to the contrary.  Some days are good - like yesterday when we made it through our entire walk/run route and then to the park and finally to the library with dry pants.  We headed straight for the bathroom when we got to the library and, success!  Then we were back home and it was like starting over at square one.  Today we're about equal with accidents vs. in the potty.  I've been peed on twice and have already done a load of laundry dedicated just to Finn.

Nobody said this was going to be so hard.

Made some Honey-Cinnamon Granola.  I've been eating it for breakfast with yogurt and trying really, really hard not to snack on it throughout the day.  I have plans to blog the recipe.  Stay tuned if you're interested.

There is not a happier boy than when Uriah gets home from work; Finn can be such a show-off, trying to squeeze every last bit of attention out of Uriah that he can.

Whole Wheat Blueberry-Cinnamon Swirl bread.  It just occurred to me that I must be on some sort of cinnamon kick.  This made amazing French toast.  I still have to figure out the whole wheat to all-purpose flour ratio; the bread didn't rise as much as I'd like, but I've been trying to substitute whole wheat flour for some of the all-purpose in a few of my recipes.  I guess there really is a science to baking - I should stop rolling my eyes at Uriah when he tells me that.

When I found him, I didn't know if I should laugh or cry.  And for the record, as soon as your kid figures out he can climb up onto the changing table it's time to take it down and dive into potty-training with a vengeance   Also, sunblock is a beast to get out of hair.

Hope you're having a somewhat better week than I am, although I can't complain too loudly - the small snow flurries haven't accumulated yet, so there's still time to be outside.  Speaking of, it's time to run off some steam (and hopefully lull a little boy into a stroller nap on the trail!).

On my mind today...

  • I made cider doughnuts for my small humans last weekend - small circles and hearts of appley goodness on a chilly Friday morning.
  • They were tasty and a bit reminiscent of fall in Kansas City - a place where temperatures still get downright warm in the afternoons and the sun shines more than it doesn't.
  • Will-power became my middle name, but I managed.  One tasty doughnut dipped in hot coffee got me through the morning.  Finn, on the other hand, was a sticky-cinnamon-sugary mess, and he kept trying to sneak more little doughnut holes when I wasn't looking.
  • You can go here to make them if you'd like, but I forewarn, the dough is really sticky and not that easy to work with.  I added extra flour to mine.  Regardless, I'll probably still make them again.
  • We walked by the lake this morning and Finn yelled: "Want to RUN!"  Apparently he likes a quicker jaunt on these chilly mornings.  I obliged.
  • The waves were high and loud on the break wall, so I kept him in his stroller and we passed the time counting the dogs we saw on the trail.
  • Our bathtub faucet is leaking.  Downside: I think we need to call a plumber.  Silver lining: I've been using the extra water to give my houseplants a drink.
  • I've decided to suck it up and drive into the Big City once a week for an actual WW meeting - and I'm going to stay for the whole thing, not just weigh in.
  • Finn will need lots of books and coloring crayons to get through.
  • Maybe I can bribe him with hot chocolate if he's a good boy...or a trip to Target.
  • Abby's almost done with volleyball, I think she has one more home game.  My goal is to bring the camera and get some pictures.  I haven't yet this year.  Slacking, I know.
  • I planted my tulips and hyacinth bulbs last week.  I check daily to make sure the squirrels haven't dug them up and eaten them.
  • This week, Finn and I are doing this turkey art project.  I just need to get some new paints...last week we painted fall trees with leaves that are hot pink, purple and blue.  I think they're hippy trees, but that was all I had for paints.  Luckily we have to go into the Big City anyway, so I guess a stop at Michael's Craft is in order!
  • And then it will be time to work on raking our leaves.  But today it's supposed to rain, so I think I'll curl up with my book instead.

Autumn Flowers

I love flowers...we had a crop of sunflowers bloom in the middle of one of the gardens recently and every time I looked out the window, I couldn't help but smile.  My mom gifted me with a hearty mum last time I was home and I had good intentions of planting it out back, but it's still gracing the middle of my dinning room table.  I think maybe it's happier as a center piece than out in the elements - or maybe I'm just feeling a bit lazy.  I was making soup the other day and I happened to glance out the side window in the kitchen and there were these little orange flowers poking their sweet heads out of the grass.  I don't know what they are, but I braved a few raindrops to get the picture!

Window to the world.

Today is probably our last day in the 80s this year (allegedly).  Finn and I need to get our walk in before we melt (we've very much gotten used to the high sixties, low seventies these past few weeks).  I will probably pack away the 24 month-2T shorts this evening after bath time; we've already pulled out the flannel jammies and I need to invest in a few more with feet.  Long live the art of layering!  The trees are starting to change over to their reds and oranges and yellows and each day there are more leaves blanketing the sidewalks.  It gets chilly in the evening and I've relocated Finn's sweatshirts downstairs for a quick grab as we take our walk after dinner when the evening cools off.

Uriah told me this morning, as he looked out our kitchen window, that our yard is full of boy.  And it's true.  Tricycles that double as motorcycles line the sidewalk.  Trucks and diggers build a construction site in the remnants of my garden and there is an assortment of balls strewn about the yard.  I wonder what he thinks, when he plays and talks to himself and bounces from one thing to the next.  I think he is just the most awesome kid ever.

Abby has her first volleyball game this week and every morning I can smell her perfume wafting up the stairs as she beats a hasty exit to the bus stop.  I wonder if there is a boy she's trying to impress with all that smelly stuff?  I volunteered to teach 7th and 8th grade religion this year - they call it church school up here - Abby's class.  I'm hoping for it to be a bonding experience between her and I, but every teacher that I spoke with on Sunday was sure to tell me good luck.  Sounds a bit ominous, if you ask me.  I also feel as though I'm questioning my own religion and whether or not I'm truly qualified to guide these kids.  I'm doubtful, but I will give it my best go.

Today is my best boy's birthday.
Happy 5th, Pal - you're the bestest nephew a girl could ask for and I miss you bunches!

Fair Play

We went to the local county fair on Sunday.

It was small.  And, in retrospect, awesome (for people watching, any way.). There were approximately 4 rides and 14 food stands.  The "beer garden" consisted of one small trailer with 2 kegs. There was no bingo. Finn refused to ride the carousel with me but Abby rode the Octopus. Twice. Allegedly, it was that awesome.  There were cheese curds (Abby insisted.).  There was cotton candy (I insisted.). There was beer (Uriah insisted.). And there were monster trucks (Finn insisted.).  Actually, Finn has repeatedly told me every day since: "I don't like monster trucks, Mama. I don't like them."  I guess they were a little bit too loud for him..

All things considered, we spent some hard-earned money on some junky prizes, but the animals were fun to look at and the cotton candy was delicious.  We'll probably do it again next year.

My favorite glass.

Moving update: the entire kitchen is packed with the exception of a few things we will need over the next couple of days - that in itself feels amazing.  Of every room in the house, the kitchen takes the most time and energy to pack.  We commenced with the paper plate eating yesterday afternoon.  Abby cleaned the crap out of both of the cars - weeks of beach sand adds up quickly and multiple trips between here and Minnesota over the past few weeks have turned up a plethora of funk in my car.  I still need to get in there with the Febreeze (I found a way to make it on Pinterest a few weeks ago, it's just not high on my list of priorities right now!) and I want to take both cars through the car wash but I can't decide if that's a pre-move or a post-move chore.  Today I'm so happy to be ahead of schedule that we were able to take a walk this morning (it was 91 degrees - not too thrilled about that, but now I feel energized!).  We are going to start taking apart furniture this afternoon and I plan to take the kids to the beach (and maybe even DQ for a cone!) as a treat for being such troopers.

Anyway, my favorite drinking glass lately is a mason jar.  I'd be willing to get rid of all of my drinking glasses and just drink out of these jars for the rest of my days (not so sure Uriah would be willing to go that far, though.).  And my favorite thing to drink out of it?  Besides tea and iced coffee, water and well, you know, whatever I happen to be drinking at the time...a white wine spritzer.  The official cocktail of moving summer.

Besides looking pretty, they taste so good!  I found the recipe chicken-scratched on a scrap of paper, so I don't know exactly where I found it - probably on Pinterest, but it looked good so I thought I'd give it a whirl this weekend when Uriah's parents were visiting.  You can use any kind of white wine that you like.  We had two different bottles of Pinot Grigio laying around so I combined them (cause I live on the edge like that!).  They tasted fine and as an added bonus - less to move!  You can also use whatever kind of clear soda you like, Uriah picked up some Sprite Zero - you know, so my cocktail could be "healthy."  I though it would be total crap but was actually pretty good (except that once you open a 2 liter, it's only fizzy for about a day and a half max.).
  • 2 bottles of white wine
  • 1 can pink lemonade concentrate, thawed
  • 6 oz. fresh raspberries
  • 7-up, Sprite, Sierra Mist
  • Lime wedges
In the bottom of a pitcher, roughly mash some of the raspberries (not quite half).  Add the wine and the pink lemonade concentrate and mix well.  You can chill it at this point, or you can just do as I did and dive right in to making your cocktail.  Put some ice in a glass (or mason jar) add a couple of raspberries, a wedge or two of lime and then fill about half-way with wine-lemonade mixture.  Top it off with some sprite and let happy hour(s) begin!

Here I go again.

Finn and I dusted off the race car stroller again this morning, after nearly a month of ignoring it.  We went early - or what I thought was going to be early enough to beat the heat.  It wasn't, the thermometer on the bank said 77 degrees already at 8:20,  so we'll be out earlier tomorrow morning.  I ran, but only just a little bit.  Pieces that were on the cusp of not jiggling a month ago had a little extra bounce this morning.  I'm confident that by the end of August, we'll be back to our old, less jiggled daily walk/run routine.  Finn's attention span is a lot shorter these days, and about half-way through the walk, he was ready to be "all done."  I had to bribe him with promises of seeing the sheep and cows on the farm that we walk past.  It worked for a little bit, but I'm getting the feeling that I'll have to up the running ante in order to make this walk a little shorter time-wise, while still getting our 4-5 miles in.  I've joined another 100 miles in 3 months Challenge, and I'm determined to get to that up to the 200 mile mark by the end of September.  Let's just say, I have some catching up to do, but I will not be deterred.

Lots to do today...lots to do for the next few weeks, actually, but the summer is winding down and soon we will have the buzz of back-to-school (Abby has already made her list.  She made it weeks ago, actually.) and yellow and orange leaves and routine.  I love routine.

In the meantime, let's revel in summer for just a little bit longer.  Here are some black and whites from our vacation to the North Shore a few weeks ago:

I'm getting back into my blogging groove and my exercising groove and my weight loss groove; I feel like I've been on summer hiatus this past month, and I have lots to share.  Stop by tomorrow and I will have some big news for you.

Can you barely contain your excitement?  I know that I can't!

And, one more thing: If you'd like to see some more black and whites from this week's photo challenge, head over to I Should Be Folding Laundry and take a peek.  Next week the challenge is Drinks, and I'm pretty sure I'll be all over that one!

Good Morning.

I can say that, as it is officially after midnight.

Look at me burning the midnight oil.  I could't sleep, so I got up to read, and then I had to set my book aside because it is coming to the end and it's one of those books where I'm just not ready to let the story go, even though I want to gobble my way through the remaining chapters.  Luckily it's a series, so I foresee a walk to the library tomorrow to get the fourth book.  I'll be disappointed if I have to wait for it.

For your Wednesday morning: blue skies and the Minneapolis skyline.  Don't you love vacation?  I sometimes wish I could be on vacation forever. But then, home is nice, too.

You Capture | Pretty

"Optimist:
Someone who figures that taking a step backward
after taking a step forward is not a disaster,
it's a cha-cha."
Robert Brault

I'm always the glass-half-empty girl.  This week, I'm going to try to be the glass-half-full girl (and by half full, I mean of flowers, not of gin!).  Trying to be inspired to capture more pretty things and also trying to view the world as one big cha-cha.

Life.

Uriah has been working like a mad-man for the past few weeks due to some work-related crap issues.  He leaves in the morning and he usually doesn't come home until the kids are in bed.  The past few days have been especially hard on Finn - I can tell that he misses his dad.  In the evening if a car drives by, he looks at me with his hopeful eyes and says, "Dad home?  Dad home?" and I tell him that Dad will be home when he opens his eyes in the morning.  Saturday Finn was acting like a rotten child - he didn't want to do anything except stand right next to me or have me hold him (which is a bit impossible when there's laundry to be done and groceries to put away and dinner to make and the lad weighs a lot!).  He didn't want to play with anything that I suggested (not even with the play-dough dog, which is his most favorite!).  I finally asked him if he missed his daddy and he nodded his little tear-stained face yes and then gave me a tight squeeze.  It broke my mama heart.  So I had Uriah call Finn when he had a free minute to talk to him on speaker.  I can't say that the evening got much better, but at least it didn't get much worse.

Our life feels very chaotic and one-sided right now.  We seem to be ships passing in the night and I find myself day-dreaming about not making dinner and maybe going on a date.  I'll be happy when Uriah's back to his "regular" schedule (although the summer season starts here this weekend, so I might be deluding myself into thinking we'll have a relatively normal schedule at any time before Labor Day!).  In the meantime, Abby's last day of 7th grade is on Friday (stay tuned for the annual Last Day of School photo!) and then we start our summer reading list (which I secretly cannot wait for!).  I've got a garage sale this weekend and I'm gearing up to go through the totes and totes of Finn's baby clothes tomorrow, which is causing me to hyperventilate a little bit.  I have very mixed feelings about it, to say the least...

Happy Monday, friends!  See you around here later this week!

Oh, simple thing, where have you gone?

We have entered this new stage...Finn seems to be leaving baby-hood behind faster than I can say "Pass the gin."  And yet, he's not really at that big-boy stage, either.  He's balancing somewhere in between in a land of afternoon naps and full-on tempers when he has to do something he doesn't want to:  wash his hands before dinner, come inside to play, eat his veggies before he can have more fruit.

His hair still smells like Johnson's Baby Shampoo and his feet smell like a full-grown man's by the end of the day.

vacillate between wanting to hide in the closet with a huge martini when he's laying on the floor kicking and screaming, to wanting to snuggle him closer and tighter just a little bit longer and sniff his baby-goodness one more time.

Spring is here said the bumblebee.

We spent the weekend at my parent's eating birthday cake and hugging on Daniel.  My heart is filled up with goodness.  Yesterday, after Emily and Jerad left for home and Daniel and Ady left for the cities, my small family stayed to play the lazy afternoon away.  While the boys napped and Abby roller bladed down the street, Mom and I went to the gym (my thighs hurt this morning!) and when Finn woke up, we played in the yard: swinging, blowing bubbles and looking at spring shooting up through the soft dirt.  We got home late last night, but it was totally worth it

I have a list a mile long today (isn't that always the case on Monday?  And I even cleaned the house before we left last weekend!).  I work most of this week.  My brother and sister-in-law will be at my parent's this weekend, so another trip to Minnesota is certainly a possibility, which means I'd better get my bum in gear!  In the meantime, if you'd like to see some more pictures of spring, head over to I Should Be Folding Laundry; it's Monday, so that means that it's also Show Off Your Shot day over at And then - She {snapped} - I couldn't decide on one shot, so I have 5.  Overachiever, I know!

I love Paris in the Springtime {You Capture | Chocolate}

It was a Paris in April themed bridal shower over the weekend and what is Paris without delectable and tasty treats?  I don't know, I've never actually been to Paris, but I plan to go there on a romantic vacation someday.  Or maybe to live for a few months after my kids are grown and gone, but only if I can brush up on my French (read: re-learn it all over again.).

I tried not to blow my diet lifestyle choice.

I had one (very skinny, tiny) piece of the lemon cheesecake, a bite of the flour-less chocolate tart and a bite of the orange cake with cream cheese frosting.

And I have not one ounce of guilt.   If I gain a pound or ten this week, it will totally have been worth it!

Happy Monday, friends!

Abs is a poser. {You Capture | White}

I'm lucky Abby's dress and shoes for her first dance had white in them, because I was crap at picking up my camera last week.  Oh, don't get me wrong, I saw lots of white for the challenge - birch trees, birds, puffy clouds, fog on the lake.  It's just that every time I saw it, I did't have my camera handy.

So...here's Abby's first dance instead. Not the actual dance, because parents showing up to the dance to take pictures would be total embarrassment and very lame. Instead I took some shots before the girls left - all giggly and excited and talking a mile a minute.

I'm not sure who's stellar idea it was to paint their nails while in their dresses, but I had to bite my tongue and hope that nobody spilled polish on her dress.  They were careful and no dresses were harmed in the making of pretty girls.

Abby can't take a picture without posing.  She's actually always been that way, so I've gotten used to having random shots of Abby looking like she's on a photo-shoot for Teen Vogue.

It was a super cute dress, though. so I can see why she'd be excited to wear it.  In fact, all of the girls put on their dresses pretty much the moment they got home from school.  I made them all put on an old shirt or a sweatshirt to eat dinner because their hair was done and they just could not be bothered to take off their dresses!  Gosh.  Aren't her shoes so cute?  It took her a little bit to convince me because heels equate to growing up in my book.  I mean, honestly, is there really anything more exciting or more definitive of growing up than getting a pair of heels?  I think not.

We all know how middle school and high school friendships can be - besties one second, arch nemesis-es the next.  She's got a pretty solid group of girlfriends, though.  All of them are polite and considerate and I would let her have any and all of these girls stay over again.  It's lovely to see that tween/teen girls can be nice to each other, supporting each other instead of being catty.  And having so much fun together.

It was fun to see friendships blossom, and to see glimpses of the young ladies that these girls are becomeing.

Next week's challenge: Easter/Pastels

Monday, March 26, 2012

Let's call this our dry run for the Bunny.

Last year I stumbled across a website that had the most vibrant dyed Easter eggs - and everything you needed to do to hollow out, dye and fill your own eggs for an Easter egg hunt.  Since I didn't have the time or the energy or, actually, come to think of it, my own house (we were in the process of packing and moving, so Easter was at my Mom's), I just read the post for it's recipe on how to dye eggs.  This year, however, I'm taking Easter to a whole new level.

I am going to make the eggs for our Easter egg hunt.  I did a trial run over the weekend to ensure that this was, in fact, going to be a feasible undertaking.  We all know that sometimes I get these grandiose ideas in my head, but fail at the executions (see: Finn's 1st Birthday Cake). However, this time was different. The process is a bit time consuming, it's not something that can be done in an hour or two, but I think the results are going to so much fun in a couple of weekends when we have a full-on Easter Egg Hunt in our back yard.

Step 1: Crack a small hole in the bottom of your eggs - or drill a small hole if you have a drill. I chose to use a pointy nut-cracker thing that I found in my junk drawer because: a) I wanted to be able to eat the eggs after I got them out of the shells and b) we don't own a teeny-tiny drill. I probably should have taken a picture of the eggs as I cracked and emptied them, but I didn't. Sorry.

Step 2:  Following the original instructions, empty the shells, clean them out of remaining egg matter and then boil the shells for 10 minutes to make sure they are good and clean and ready for your Easter fillings.  Allow the egg shells to dry completely.  Note: THE SHELLS ARE FRAGILE!  They will crack easily.  That's the point later on when the eggs are found and need to be cracked open to get the surprises out, but for now, be gentle!

Step 3: Following the original recipe, make your egg dyes.  Boiling water, vinegar and both regular and neon food coloring will do the trick.  After you've made your dyes, submerge one egg in each color.  The original recipe has soaking times for each color, as well, to get the optimal color.  I didn't really follow the time guidelines - mine were in longer, although for how long, I can't really say.  I sometimes don't pay attention to time.  Also, I was taking pictures.  Go figure.

Step 4: Allow your son to run around the back yard in just a diaper and some shoes.  If you're lucky, the neighbors will think nothing of you taking pictures of a bunch of colored jars and begging your half-nudie baby to "not touch!"  And yes, he's just beyond each shot, pointing and giggling.

Step 5: Continue to allow them to soak.  They get so much prettier the longer they soak.

Step 6: Remove eggs from dye when you think they've soaked enough.  I used a lone chopstick and my fingers to get the eggs out.  Place them on a cooling rack with a paper towel underneath so you don't stain your counters.  You want the air to circulate up into the bottom of the shells to dry out the inside, too, so if you don't have a cooling rack, you can let them dry in your empty egg carton, just flip them over when the outside is dry.  Allow them to dry completely.  I left mine out overnight.  This is where the time-consuming part of the project comes in.

Step 7: Fill the eggs.  I used pastel colored M&M's over the weekend (because I love peanut m&m's more than just about anything in the whole entire wide world), but I'll probably find some really small surprises to put in the eggs for our hunt.  To cover the bottom of the eggs after you've filled them, use small muffin papers.  Again...I forgot to take a picture - sorry.  I was having too much fun!  I found mini-white cupcake liners at the Wals-mart, I put a little glue around the bottom of my egg, near the hole, then attached the cupcake liner and put them back into the egg carton, paper side down, until the glue was dry.  Voila!  And we have eggs for a hunt.

Step 8: Hide the eggs and practice finding them.  I think he's got it down.

Big FUN plans this week:  Uriah's birthday is tomorrow!  (I love birthdays!).  We are also going to make some more eggs.  We are going to make some Bunny Bait.  We're going to try finger painting.  We are going to get some Easter books from the library.  And Abby has her first school dance.

If you'd like to see some more fun pictures, head over here to I Should Be Folding Laundry.  Last week I had such sweet comments left after participating in the black & white challenge, it made me smile every time I read something someone wrote!  I love that inspiring feeling!  Anyway, I have a feeling I will be adding fun pictures all week...like the two newest additions to our family that I will be sharing with you tomorrow!
